So was birthed the living and the dead,
Bright Solstice & her Twin, Dark Nox
The sisters in balance carried the world
between what is to come
and what will pass;
What life there will be
And what life is lost.
- On the Origin Of The Soul:
~Viceroy Winston Serrano
The world of Lux Brumalis was seen over by two great goddesses of equal power and measure: One of light, life, and Summer. One of dark, death, and Winter. The bright goddess of the sun was called Solstice & her twin, she of the moon, was known by Nox.
In all things there was balance through them. When Solstice gave light to one side of the world, Nox took it from the other. While life was given by Solstice, Nox pulled it away.
This giving and taking went on for all of time until Nox, surely bitter and jealous of the adoration heaped upon her sister and the hatred shared for her, brought forth a comet between our world and her light. For exactly 17 minutes the light was extinguished. It was enough time for Nox to act.
In the unexpected darkness she overwhelmed her sister. Nox plunged the world into darkness and everlasting winter. Solstice's crown was shattered and fell from the stars into the land. Continents were ripped to pieces. The seas became unshackled.
In the catastrophe that followed, Solstice tried her best to save what life she could. From her hands portals opened, providing means for as many as possible to enter The Valley of the Hearth, also known as Cor Vallis, the home of her beloved Solsworn, those devoted to her light. A place safer than any other.
The Solsworn are chosen to be Solstice's guardians. Though magic ran through the veins of the world, her people commanded a greater portion. Their protection gave Cor Vallis some measure of hope against the winter, a place of refuge against Nox.
They could rebuild her crown, bring the light back to its rightful place, and place death behind Solstice once again.
The Solsworn said:
"Come to us, seekers of the sun
Here she will be reborn
And we will bring Nox to heel"
You are a Lightseeker, searching the ruins of this world for the sacred shards of her light. You will scour the remains of the world gone dark, and through the peril, we will all prevail. Those twisted to shades by Nox's jealousy will be saved and the world will be put right again.
You are from anywhere in Lux Brumalis, from the barbarous coasts to the industrial lands of the east. You've made it to The Valley of the Hearth. Will you aid the Solsworn in saving Solstice, or will you keep what's yours to survive the endless tundra on your own? The darkness might offer its own rewards, after all…

The world of this story is at the very beginnings of a Magic Industrial Revolution. Instead of coal, or steam, the world has found a way to generate power based on the sun, on magic. These new developments have led to a world that was just on the cusp of breaking into real meaningful technological development. Unfortunately, much of that has now been lost.
This means that you are likely familiar with some limited manner of mass production, light, indoor plumbing, definitely have seen or experienced some kinds of magic, but you are not familiar with technologies like telephone communication or, say, cars.
Solstice and her sister formed the cycle of balance throughout the World. She is the Sun, the adorer of great works. She weaves ahead of her sister all things living and beautiful, warm and giving.
Nox is the antithesis of her sister. Her work is to unravel the lives of those created by Solstice. She lives in torment that her work can never truly be completed. She took the advantage offered by an eclipse to overwhelm her sister and claim the world for her own. She will undo all life and finally have rest.
The paladins of Solstice. They are chosen by Solstice herself and lead a life secluded in Light. They are her worshipers and purely devoted. To be chosen by Solstice is to be seen by the goddess as having a soul most pure.
Shadowy figures of the dead. They are without will, entirely obedient to Nox and the great cause of Death. Little else is known about them.
